About
You can watch Earth (1930) on Kanopy with a participating library card, or buy on Takflix.
The film tells about the creation of the first collective farm communes and class enmity. Vasyl, a member of the Komsomol, with the help of a local party organization, gets a tractor and plows private boundaries "on kulak fields." However, this enthusiasm will cost him dearly.
This silent era relic swaps typical propaganda tropes for a visceral, tactile look at the collision between ancient soil and modern machinery. The heavy machinery thunders through private fields to dismantle old social hierarchies, creating a jarring visual contrast between tradition and progress.
