About
You can stream The Moon Has Risen (1955) on Criterion Channel with a subscription.
Mokichi is the widowed father of three daughters, with whom he lives on the premises of a temple since the war. All three daughters become involved in some sort of complicated relationships.
This gentle domestic comedy subverts post-war melancholy by finding humor in the messy, overlapping romantic entanglements of three sisters. It trades heavy drama for a quiet, rhythmic observation of family life unfolding within the sanctuary of a temple.
